Wasp Nest Removal Chesterfield

It's that time of year again.
You've probably noticed the same wasps going in and out of the same spot. Maybe it's the eaves above the front door. Maybe it's a gap in the brickwork. Maybe it's the loft, and the noise is louder than you thought it would be.
By the time someone calls me, the nest has usually been there a few weeks and they've tried to ignore it.
I'm Gregg. I run Protecta Pest Control Ltd in Chesterfield, and wasps are the bulk of what I do from June through to October. Here's what's involved.

What you're probably looking at

Wasps build new nests every year, from spring onwards.
A nest starts small, the size of a golf ball, built by a single queen. By July it's the size of a football. By August it can be the size of a beach ball with thousands of wasps in it.
The common places I find them around Chesterfield:

  • Under roof tiles and in soffits
  • Inside loft spaces
  • Behind fascia boards
  • In wall cavities, accessed through air bricks or mortar gaps
  • In garden sheds and outbuildings
  • In compost heaps and old tree stumps
  • In bird boxes nobody's checked since spring

If you're seeing more than a handful of wasps going in and out of one spot over a few minutes, that's an active nest.

Why DIY wasp removal often goes wrong

I get called to a fair few jobs where someone's tried first.

The two main problems.

You spray the entry point with shop-bought killer. The wasps coming back find it blocked, panic, and start looking for another way out. Sometimes that's through the loft hatch. Sometimes a light fitting. Sometimes the ceiling.

Or you go up a ladder at the wrong time of day and the wasps come out faster than you expected.

Wasps don't like vibration, and they don't like being blocked in. Stings hurt, and if you're allergic you might not know it until the second or third one. I've been to jobs where someone's been stung dozens of times trying to deal with a nest themselves.

If a nest is reachable from ground level with no ladder, in a shed for example, and you know what you're doing, you can sometimes deal with it yourself. Anything higher than that, get someone in.

How I treat wasp nests
I use a professional insecticidal dust, applied directly to the entry point.
The wasps walk through it as they come and go, carry it back into the nest, and the colony is killed off within 24 to 48 hours.
Most jobs take 15 to 20 minutes once I'm at the entry point.
I don't usually remove the nest itself. There's no need. Once the colony is dead, the nest is empty, and wasps won't reuse it next year. They build fresh each season.
If the nest is somewhere you'd rather not have sitting around, in your loft for example, I can take it down once it's safe to do so. That's usually a separate visit a few days later.
I work with a triple-section ladder and full PPE. I can reach most domestic eaves and first-floor entry points safely.

What it costs

Wasp nest treatment is £60.
If you've got a second nest at the same address on the same visit, that's £25.
If wasps are still active a few days after treatment, I'll come back and re-treat for free. This doesn't happen often, but it can with very large nests or awkward entry points.
I take card or bank transfer. No call-out charges on top.

What about next year

A treated nest is dead. Wasps will not move back into it.
But the same building can attract a new nest the following year if the entry points are still open. Lofts, soffit gaps and air bricks are common repeat spots.
If you've had wasps two years running, it's worth getting those access points sealed in winter when nothing's nesting.

Can you leave a wasp nest alone?

If it's well away from the house, in a tree at the bottom of the garden for example, you can often leave it. The colony dies off in autumn and the nest won't be reused.

If it's on the house, in the loft, near a door, or anywhere people walk past, treat it.

Next steps

If you've got an active nest, the sooner it's treated the cheaper it stays. A nest in June is a 15 minute job. The same nest in late August has ten times the wasps and more work to find them all.

Phone or text me us on 07398674924

Norma takes calls during the day if I'm out on a job.

Tell me roughly where the wasps are going in and what time of day they're busiest, and I can usually be with you the same day or the next morning.
